Macarty & Norris began in 1923 in the backyard of a home at 87 Church Street Ryde.
Raffi bought the business on 1 July 1988, from the son-in-law of one of the original owners.
While we were situated in those premises, there wasn’t too much room to grow.
We managed to install a spray booth. We had to drive a car through the lunchroom/office to get in and out of the spray booth.
We struggled with parking and disgruntled neighbours, being in a residential street.
In 1996 we moved to 1 Mellor Street West Ryde.
This was a disused warehouse, which we renovated to turn into a panel shop.
We were so pleased with how large it was and the car parking alone was twice the size of our old shop.
We never thought we would fill it, boy were we wrong !
In 2008 we reconfigured and revamped the office/reception area.
We also cladded the exterior of the building.
We are continually trying to improve both the office area and the workshop space.
At this point in time we are running at our smallest staff numbers since moving to larger premises.
The team works so well together and we hope to keep the status quo.
We currently have 2 in the office and 5 on the floor.
We have a high staff retention rate, with one in particular now in his 26th year.
We have witnessed numerous staff members grow up, get married and have children. Including ourselves !
We believe our biggest achievement is the fact that we have achieved and maintained a reputation for care and quality.
The majority of our client base is repeat business and word of mouth.
We survive without being a ‘preferred’, which is no easy task.
One of our children is a qualified spray painter, although no longer actively working in the Industry.
Another of our children is currently a 3rd year apprentice panel beater with us, and is loving work.
We have put our heart and soul into this business.
We have had so much fun, learnt a lot and have so many memories.
