Donovan’s journey began with a love for cars passed down from his grandfather, a race car driver. That early spark led him to swap textbooks for toolboxes and he hasn’t looked back since. Now an apprentice at Parkway Motors in Rosedale, Auckland, Donovan is trusted with major technical jobs, engine swaps, camshaft replacements and even rebuilding a 15-litre ISX-15 truck engine solo while working at Cummins Diesel.
But Donovan’s impact goes beyond the workshop floor. He’s brought in new clients, including a major fleet account, is known for his initiative, communication skills and leadership potential. He’s also building a high-performance turbocharged Honda Civic in his spare time.
“I believe success in this trade isn’t just about turning spanners, it’s about communication, trust and delivering quality under pressure,” Donovan said. “Being recognised by Capricorn and the sponsors means a lot. It shows that taking initiative and backing yourself really matters.”
Donovan’s story reflects broader trends in New Zealand’s automotive industry, as highlighted in the 2025 Capricorn State of the Nation report. The report shows that 80% of workshops plan to grow or improve profitability, and apprentice employment is rising, signalling a strong commitment to developing the next generation of skilled workers.
Capricorn Group CEO, Brad Gannon said “Donovan exemplifies the qualities the Rising Stars Awards were created to celebrate.”
“Donovan’s technical skill, leadership mindset and passion for the trade are exactly what the industry needs,” Brad Gannon said. “He’s not just learning the ropes, he’s setting the pace.”
Minister for Climate Change, Energy, Local Government and Revenue Hon Simon Watts commended Donovan’s achievement and Capricorn’s investment in future talent.
“Apprentices like Donovan Le Roux represent the future of New Zealand’s skilled workforce,” Minister Watts said. “Their drive, innovation and technical excellence are exactly what we need to strengthen our local industries and build a resilient, low-emissions economy.”
The Rising Stars Awards, supported by Castrol, Repco, and The Workshop Whisperer, recognise outstanding apprentices across Australia and New Zealand. They celebrate those who go above and beyond, take initiative and show a genuine commitment to the future of the automotive industry.
