Gisborne apprentice auto electrician Carter Boyle has been named the New Zealand Winner in the 2026 Capricorn Rising Stars Awards.

Completing an Automotive Engineering Level 3 qualification through the Eastern Institute of Technology while undertaking his apprenticeship with Eastland Auto Electrical, Carter has developed a reputation as a highly capable and motivated young technician. At just 18 years old, he will now be considered for the inaugural overall New Zealand Rising Stars Award Winner.

He has earned the respect of his colleagues through his professionalism and passion for emerging technologies, including electric vehicles and battery applications.

Capricorn Group Chief Executive Officer Brad Gannon said Carter was a deserving recipient of the New Zealand title.

"For someone so early in his career, Carter has already earned a remarkable level of trust from the people around him.

"He's not only building strong technical skills, but he’s showing a genuine interest in where the industry is heading. That's exactly the kind of mindset that will help shape the future of the automotive industry.

"This year is also a significant year for the Capricorn Rising Stars Awards. For the first time, we're recognising Overall Winners in both Australia and New Zealand, in addition to our Regional Winners.

"It means we're recognising more apprentices than ever before, while also acknowledging the important role Member workshops play in helping them build successful careers.”

Eastland Auto Electrical Director Scott Wootton said Carter had consistently exceeded expectations since joining the business.

"Carter is developing into far more than a skilled technician. He is becoming someone who will contribute positively to the future of the automotive industry.

"His initiative, reliability and technical capability have earned him a level of trust that is uncommon for someone at this stage of their career. He takes ownership of his learning, embraces challenges and approaches every task with professionalism and determination."

“Among Carter's key achievements is successfully diagnosing a complex remote-locking fault on a Toyota Aqua that had previously challenged other technicians. Through a methodical approach and persistence, he identified a fault linked to the ignition key reminder circuit and successfully resolved the issue.”

Carter has also developed a strong interest in emerging technologies, particularly electric vehicles and battery applications, and has been involved in projects exploring the repurposing of EV batteries for off-grid solar applications.

"What excites me most is how quickly the industry is evolving, especially with electric vehicles, hybrid systems and the growing level of electronics in modern vehicles," Carter said.

"I enjoy learning new things and challenging myself. As the industry changes, I want to continue developing my skills so I can contribute to the technologies that will become more common in the future."

Comments attributed to premier partner, Castrol: “Supporting the next generation of technicians is an investment in the future of our industry. Through our partnership with the Capricorn Rising Stars, Castrol is proud to recognise apprentices who demonstrate the commitment, curiosity and technical excellence needed to succeed in an increasingly advanced automotive landscape.” says Ben Rose, National Sales Director, Castrol Australia.
