Kununurra auto electrical apprentice Deklan Garcia has been named the Western Australia Regional Winner in the 2026 Capricorn Rising Stars Awards.
Originally from Wyndham, Deklan restarted his apprenticeship after deciding he needed better hands-on learning opportunities. He is now completing his apprenticeship with Alliance Auto Electrics, trading as TopVolt, where he has built a reputation for reliability, professionalism and pride in his work.
As a Regional Winner, Deklan Garcia receives $3,000 cash and will now be considered for the Overall Australian Rising Star Award.
Capricorn Group Chief Executive Officer Brad Gannon said Deklan’s journey demonstrated resilience and a genuine commitment to his trade.
"Deklan's journey hasn't followed a conventional path, but that's exactly what makes his achievement so impressive.
"He recognised he wasn't getting the experience he needed, made the decision to start again and has built a reputation as someone who takes genuine pride in his work. That determination will serve him well throughout his career."
His employer, Brent Wittwer, said Deklan consistently demonstrated the qualities of an outstanding apprentice.
“Whether he's carrying out routine maintenance or diagnosing complex faults, Deklan takes the time to do the job properly. He takes great pride in his work, supports his teammates and represents our business with professionalism beyond his years,” Brent Wittwer said.
“My workmates would probably say my biggest strength is passion,” Deklan said.
“I take pride in my work and always want to make sure the job is done right the first time. I love seeing a vehicle leave the workshop knowing I've done the best job I possibly can.”
A proud Aboriginal apprentice from the Kimberley, Deklan hopes his experience will encourage other young people to pursue a trade and build a rewarding career.
The Capricorn Overall Australian Rising Stars Award will be announced on 2 October 2026.
