At Capricorn, we care about your safety, not just on the road but online too. Cyber security might sound complicated, but protecting yourself doesn’t have to be. With a few simple steps, you can keep your business safe and running smoothly.
Why it matters
According to the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC), the average cost of a cybercrime for small businesses in 2023–24 was $49,600. That’s a serious hit to any workshop. And it’s not just big companies being targeted, every business is at risk, especially when human error is involved.
The good news? You don’t need to be a tech expert to protect yourself.
4 easy ways to strengthen your cyber security
1. Turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA)
Think of MFA like adding a second lock to your workshop door. Even if someone has the key (your password), they still can’t get in because of the second lock.
MFA works by asking for:
- Something you know (like your password or PIN)
- Something you have (such as an authenticator app, physical key or passkey)
- Something you are (Biometric e.g. fingerprint, face or eye scan)
If the service supports it, always opt for phishing-resistant MFA, which uses methods like a passkey in your authenticator app or a physical security key. Unlike regular MFA which often relies on codes sent via SMS or email, phishing-resistant MFA verifies your identity using cryptographic techniques that can’t be tricked or intercepted, offering the highest level of protection against cyber-attacks.
If phishing-resistant MFA isn’t available, use an authenticator app (e.g. Microsoft Authenticator or Google Authenticator) over SMS or email codes. Authenticator apps generate secure, time-based codes directly on your device, even without network access they are far less vulnerable to interception or SIM swapping (a type of cyber-attack where criminals trick or bribe a mobile provider into transferring your phone number to a SIM card they control).
Where should you use MFA?
Anywhere you log in to important accounts:
- Online banking
- Cloud storage
- Business apps and tools
Most services now offer MFA, and it only takes a few minutes to set up. It’s a small step that adds a big layer of protection, just like locking up your tools at the end of the day.
2. Use strong passwords and a password manager
We’ve all heard “use a strong password”, but what does that mean, especially now?
If your using MFA, a password with at least 8 characters is considered sufficient. But if MFA isn’t available, aim for 15 characters or more to stay secure. Short passwords can be cracked in seconds, while longer ones are much harder to break.
A strong password should be long, unpredictable and unique. Try using four or more random words like “blue house sea bike” or “diamond egg sand muffin clay”. And instead of trying to remember them all, use a password manager which stores your passwords securely and makes logging in easy.
3. Spot suspicious emails and act with caution
Most cyber-attacks start with a dodgy email and with AI helping scammers write better messages, they’re getting harder to spot. That’s why it’s important to slow down and stay alert. If something feels off, trust your gut:
- Double-check payment requests
- Avoid clicking suspicious links
- Take a moment to think before acting
Tip: If you get a link in an email or text, don’t click it. Instead, open your browser and go to the official website yourself. If there’s something important, it’ll be there. If not, it will probably be a scam.
4. Keep your software updated
Outdated systems and devices, whether in your automotive workshop or at home are easy targets for cyber-attacks. Software updates often include critical security fixes that block new threats, so keeping everything current is essential.
- Turn on automatic updates wherever possible, especially on workshop computers, diagnostic tools and mobile devices used for business
- Make sure your antivirus software is active and up to date if you have one
- Install protection on all devices, including personal phones and tablets that might access work-related accounts
Just like you wouldn’t leave your workshop unlocked overnight, don’t leave your digital doors wide open.
